Who was Claudio Naranjo?

A remarkable man and a visionary teacher

A passionate researcher and eternal explorer, he offered the world a brilliant synthesis of sometimes opposing realms: psychology, science, art and spiritual awakening. A pioneer shaped by multiple influences, he perfectly embodied the spirit of synthesis characteristic of the Renaissance man, involving a harmonious and dynamic balance between body, heart and intellect. He dedicated much of his life to helping others in their quest for transformation.

His youth and the influence of Tótila Albert

Born in November 1932 in Chile, Claudio Naranjo grew up in an artistic environment that shaped his creative mind. He studied music, medicine and philosophy. After training at the Chilean Institute of Psychoanalysis with Ignacio Matte Blanco, he taught at the University of Chile and directed the Centre for Studies in Medical Anthropology.

Amongst the important influences of this period was the Chilean poet and sculptor of German origin, Tótila Albert, who remained an inspiration throughout his life and whom Claudio Naranjo considered his spiritual predecessor.

The 1960s

Awarded a scholarship, his quest for knowledge took him to the United States, first to Harvard and then to Berkeley. He worked at the Centre for Studies of Personality and collaborated with Gordon Allport, Raymond Cattell and other leading theorists and scientists in personality analysis and testing. During this period, he was actively involved in the Californian counterculture, embodied in the 1960s by the Human Potential Movement at Esalen. It was there that he met Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt therapy, who recognised him as one of his most gifted successors.

During these years, Claudio Naranjo completed further training and supervision with Jim Simkin in Los Angeles and attended Charlotte Selver’s sensory awareness workshops. He also formed a close friendship with Carlos Castaneda.

This was also the era of psychedelic research, in which Claudio Naranjo played an active role. Drawing on his expertise as a psychiatrist, he studied the effects of hallucinogenic substances used by Amazonian Indigenous peoples and also took part in the innovative psychedelic therapy developed by Leo Zeff.

At the same time, he taught comparative religion and worked as a consultant for Stanford’s Centre for Education Policy Analysis. He met spiritual masters such as Idries Shah, Swami Muktananda and His Holiness the 14th Karmapa. These encounters inspired his first book, The Paths of Creativity.

The Enneagram of personality – central to Claudio Naranjo’s work

The 1970s

In 1970, the accidental death of his only son, aged eleven, marked a decisive turning point in his life. In search of meaning following this loss, he joined fifty other participants to study with Oscar Ichazo near the city of Arica in Chile. Oscar Ichazo was a mysterious figure who described himself as a representative of the “prophetic tradition of the West”, which appears to be a school of thought that was later adopted by Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

He received from Ichazo the foundations of the Enneagram of Personality and concluded this experience with a forty-day solitary retreat in the desert. This marked the beginning of a spiritual awakening and an inner guidance that would transform both his life and his work.

Upon returning to Berkeley, in a state of expanded awareness and drawing on his earlier research into typology as well as his Gestalt therapy practice, he devoted himself to the creation of the Psychology of the Enneatypes, a powerful tool for personal exploration and transformation.

From the richness of these various experiences emerged the SAT Programme (Seekers After Truth), a contemporary path of self-knowledge and psycho-spiritual development that emphasises inner transformation rather than the mere learning of techniques. This programme integrates meditation, the Enneagram of Personality, Gestalt therapy, biographical work on parental figures, as well as a range of body-based and expressive approaches.

The SAT began in the 1970s in Berkeley in a spontaneous and creative way, and it was within this context that work with the Enneagram of Personality was introduced in a setting defined not only by confidentiality, but also by a commitment not to disseminate it publicly.

During this same period, Claudio met Bob Hoffman on the Hoffman page), with whom he co-developed the Hoffman Process. After two years of expanded states of consciousness, Claudio entered a painful phase that he described as his “dark night of the soul”. During this period of contraction, and in response to the growing commercialisation of the Enneagram of Personality workshops in the United States, he decided to stop teaching it altogether.

The 1980s

In Mexico, at the invitation of several therapists, he gradually regained confidence and began teaching again through various workshops. His preferred themes included interpersonal meditation, Gestalt therapy, inner music, the Hero’s Journey, neo-shamanism, psychedelic exploration and work on parental figures.

During these years of renewal in Mexico, he made no mention of the Enneagram, continuing instead to deepen his observations of character through a secular reading of the seven deadly sins.

In 1983, Nine Portraits of Jesus: Discovering Jesus through the Enneagram by Robert Nogosek was published in the United States. With the commitment to secrecy broken, Claudio allowed himself to present the psychology of the Enneatypes first in Mexico and later in Spain.

In its first Spanish version in 1987, entitled SAT en Babia, the programme took the form of an annual retreat lasting a full month. It later evolved into its current format.

A vision of integrative education to awaken collective consciousnes

The 1990s

Claudio devoted his energy to a broader cause: the transformation of education. He advocated for an educational revolution capable of healing the imbalances of our civilisation. His aim was to reinvent schooling by infusing it with an integrative form of education, one able to awaken the consciousness of future generations and help build a more enlightened world. Suzy Stroke was by his side and supported him in his various writing projects; she represented a highly significant feminine presence in the SAT Programme.

During this decade and the decades that followed, he continually revised and refined, with the support of new collaborators, the various components of the SAT Programme, which became established in several European countries (Italy, France and Germany), in Latin America (Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador), as well as in Russia.

The years 2000 to 2019

In 2003, the International Enneagram Association invited Claudio to present to an American audience the results of his research on subtypes and their importance in the dynamics of the Enneatypes. He subsequently led several SAT Programmes in California.

In 2007, he founded the Claudio Naranjo Foundation in Spain, whose mission is to disseminate the SAT Programme as well as his original approach to the transformation of education. That same year, he introduced in France and Germany an international SAT Programme taught in English, French and German, intended for participants from all over the world.

Between 2010 and 2018, offered various multicultural workshops of great experimental boldnes (link retrospective)

He passed away on the 12th of July 2019 in Berkeley, at his home where he returned once a year since leaving the United States, to continue his research and writing. Following a simple Tibetan ceremony led by his Buddhist teacher, Tarthang Tulku, his ashes were laid to rest alongside those of his son.

A living legacy at the crossroads of therapy, spirituality and education

Claudio Naranjo bequeaths us an original approach that transcends disciplinary boundaries and enriches the contemporary landscape of psychotherapy, spirituality and education. In recognition of his visionary commitment, the University of Udine in Italy awarded him an honorary doctorate in education.

His teachings, grounded in a deep trust in our potential for self-regulation and mutual support, help us to better face the challenges posed by a patriarchal culture that has lost its values and sense of guidance.

For those seeking self-knowledge and spiritual awakening, for artists drawn to the creative dimension of his approach, and for educators eager to reinvent schooling, his legacy remains—more than ever—vibrant and alive.
